- Artificial intelligence model identifies potential risk genes for Parkinson's diseaseon January 29, 2025 at 3:11 am
Researchers have successfully applied advanced artificial intelligence (AI) genetics models to Parkinson's disease. Researchers identified genetic factors in progression and FDA-approved drugs that can potentially be repurposed for PD treatment. The report uses an approach called 'systems biology,' which uses AI to integrate and analyze multiple different forms of information from genetic, proteomic, pharmaceutical and patient datasets to identify patterns that may not be obvious from analyzing one for of data on its own.
- Biotin may shield brain from manganese-induced damage, study findson January 21, 2025 at 9:21 pm
The B vitamin mitigates manganese neurotoxicity, which produces symptoms that resemble Parkinson's disease. The vitamin improves dopamine production in the brain and offers potential therapeutic benefits.
- Hearing impairment may be a sign of increased risk of Parkinson's diseaseon January 14, 2025 at 5:52 pm
There may be a link between hearing impairment and an increased risk of developing Parkinson's according to new research. This is one of the first studies to examine whether sensory impairments, such as hearing loss, might increase the risk for Parkinson's or serve as an early warning sign. Parkinson's UK reports that an estimated 153,000 people in the UK currently live with Parkinson's, which is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.
- Brain study challenges long-held views about Parkinson's movement disorderson January 3, 2025 at 5:49 pm
Researchers uncovered new findings about involuntary muscle movements that come with long-term administration of Parkinson's drug levodopa.
- Propranolol reduces tremors in Parkinson's diseaseon December 23, 2024 at 6:53 pm
The standard medication levodopa does not always work against tremors in Parkinson's disease, especially in stressful situations. Propranolol, however, does work during stress, providing insight into the role of the stress system in tremors. MRI scans reveal that propranolol directly inhibits activity in the brain circuit that controls tremors. Doctors may consider this medication when levodopa is ineffective.
