  • Ultra-powerful brain scanners offer hope for treating cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease
    on May 17, 2022 at 1:31 am

Ultra-powerful 7T MRI scanners could be used to help identify those patients with Parkinson's disease and similar conditions most likely to benefit from new treatments for previously-untreatable symptoms, say scientists.

  • Boost in nerve-growth protein helps explain why running supports brain health
    on May 16, 2022 at 5:50 pm

Exercise increases levels of a chemical involved in brain cell growth, which bolsters the release of the 'feel good' hormone dopamine, a new study shows. Dopamine is known to play a key role in movement, motivation, and learning. Experts have long understood that regular running raises dopamine activity in the brain and may protect nerve cells from damage. In addition, past research has tied exercise-driven boosts in the dopamine-triggering chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and in dopamine levels to improvements in learning and memory. However, the precise way these three factors interact has until now remained unclear.

  • Designer neurons offer new hope for treatment of Parkinson's disease
    on May 11, 2022 at 4:36 pm

Scientists describe a process for converting non-neuronal cells into functioning neurons able to take up residence in the brain, send out their fibrous branches across neural tissue, form synapses, dispense dopamine and restore capacities undermined by Parkinson's destruction of dopaminergic cells.

  • Researchers find link between Parkinson's gene and vocal issues that could lead to earlier diagnosis
    on May 4, 2022 at 6:45 pm

Neuroscientists found that higher levels of the alpha-synuclein protein in the brain can lead to changes in vocal production.

  • A new mutation behind synucleinopathies
    on April 29, 2022 at 6:48 pm

Scientists have carried out an extensive study of a newly discovered mutation that can uncover new insights into the molecular basis of pathology formation in a family of disorders that includes Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease.
